ANT-MAN...doesn't quite have the same ring as Spider-Man, Iron Man, Batman, or Superman. Despite being number one at the box office, Ant-Man's $58 million debut pales in comparison to most of films set within the Marvel Comics universe. Avengers: Age of Ultron almost quadrupled that amount earlier this year, earning a whopping $191 million in its first weekend.
Ant-Man marks the company's lowest domestic debut since The Incredible Hulk. Captain America: The First Avenger even had a better opening. Outside of the world of die-hard Avenger comics readers, not too many people know about the less popular Avengers. Being an avid reader of comics, I never knew much about Ant-Man, or The Guardians of the Galaxy. But unlike GOTG, Ant-Man lacks what will attract non comic readers. GOTG was able to attract a larger viewing public because many of its elements are reminiscent of many Space/Sci-Fi sagas that have came before. Ant-Man's opening is not the opening Marvel was hoping for, especially given the fact that it was well received by critics. I normally rush out to see every Marvel Studio produced film, but something about this movie, just didn't give me the same need to go out on opening weekend and shell out some hard-earned cash for tickets. Sorry Ant-Man.
